St Clair County, MI Community

Hey there, St. Clair County shoppers! As part of our Black Friday Guide 2024, we’ve put together some safety tips to keep you out of trouble while you’re hunting for those sweet deals. So, grab your coffee, put on your comfy shoes, and let’s dive into how to stay safe during the shopping frenzy!

Keep Your Eyes Peeled

First things first, folks. You must stay sharp when you’re out in the wild world of Black Friday shopping. It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of scoring that big-screen TV for a steal, but don’t let your guard down. Thieves love a distracted shopper, so keep your wits about you.

Watch Your Wallet: Leave the big wads of cash at home. Stick to cards – they’re safer and easier to cancel if something goes wrong. And for Pete’s sake, don’t wave your money around like you’re at a rap video shoot. Keep it tucked away and only pull it out when you’re ready to pay.

Purse Protection: Ladies (and gents with man-bags), keep your purse close. Don’t leave it in your cart while wrestling another shopper for the last PlayStation 5. Seriously, it’s like leaving a steak out for a hungry dog. Keep it zipped and close, and maybe consider a cross-body bag for extra security.

Don’t Get Trampled, Folks!

We’ve all seen those videos of people getting squashed like bugs when the store doors open. Don’t be one of those people, okay? It’s not worth ending up in McLaren Port Huron Hospital over a discounted toaster.

Avoid the Stampede: If a store offers special deals for the first 100 customers, you may skip it. Or at least wait and let the crazies go first. Your safety is worth more than saving a few bucks.

Bright and Visible: Wear something bright when shopping with friends or family. It’ll help you spot each other in the crowd. Think less “blend in with the shelves” and more “I’m auditioning for a crossing guard job.”

Road Warriors, Listen Up!

Getting to and from the stores can be just as crazy as shopping. St. Clair County roads can get pretty hectic on Black Friday, so let’s talk about staying safe on the asphalt jungle.

Drive Like You’ve Had Your Coffee: Black Friday brings out the worst in drivers. Everyone’s in a rush, tempers are short, and patience is thinner than the leftover turkey slices. Take it easy out there. The deals will still be there if you’re five minutes late.

Parking Lot Prowess: Finding a spot at Birchwood Mall might feel like winning the lottery, but don’t lose your cool. Park in well-lit areas, and don’t leave your purchases visible in the car for the love of all that’s holy. That’s just asking for trouble.

Tech-Savvy Shopping

Nowadays, your phone can be your best friend or your worst enemy while shopping. Use it wisely, my friends.

Stay Connected: Make sure everyone in your shopping squad has a fully charged phone. Set up a meeting spot in case you get separated. Maybe by the giant Santa at Birchwood Mall – you can’t miss him!

App it Up: Use your phone to compare prices and check for better deals online. But don’t get so absorbed in your screen that you miss what’s happening around you. That’s how you end up with someone’s shopping cart embedded in your shin.

Kids on Board? Extra Caution Needed!

If you’re brave (or crazy) enough to bring the little ones along, we’ve got some tips for you, too.

Teach ‘Em Young: Before you hit the stores, chat with your kids about what to do if they get lost. Tell them to find a store employee or a security guard—preferably one who doesn’t look like they’re about to lose it over the Black Friday madness.

Dress for Success: Put your kids in bright, easy-to-spot clothes. Maybe even consider one of those child leashes. They look silly, but losing your kid in the toy aisle at Walmart is, too.

Online Shopping: The Comfy Alternative

For those of you who’d rather shop from the comfort of your couch (smart move, by the way), we’ve got some tips for you, too.

Secure Your Connection: Make sure you’re using a secure Wi-Fi connection. Shopping over public Wi-Fi is like shouting your credit card number in the middle of Pine Grove Park – not a great idea.

Too Good to Be True?: If a deal looks suspiciously awesome, it probably is. Stick to reputable sites and be wary of emails promising incredible offers. Your inbox is not the North Pole; that sender is definitely not Santa.

Shop Safe!

Remember, St. Clair County shoppers, no deal is worth risking your safety. Whether you’re braving the crowds at Birchwood Mall or clicking away on your laptop at home, stay alert, stay smart, and stay safe.

And hey, if all else fails, there’s always Cyber Monday. You can shop in your pajamas, and the only thing you’ll have to wrestle with is your cat for control of the keyboard.

Happy shopping, St. Clair County! May your carts be full, your wallets be intact, and your holiday season be merry and bright—and, most importantly, safe!
